The Travels-USA.info site has a specific niche in the scheme of things; it publishes old books on travels in the United States of America. Often the books were written before the USA existed, which shouldn’t cause much of a problem to modern readers.

Some travels are entirely with the boundaries of the United States, but others have a broader range, the Canadian and Mexican borders are often crossed. Visitors from Europe frequently include a description of their sea voyages. No apologies are made for this.

The bias of many authors is obvious. A few American writers are excessively patriotic, on the other hand, visitors to America often denigrate the behaviour of Americans. No attempt is made to edit-out or moderate views or behaviours that are no longer socially acceptable. Bowdlerism is not one of our vices.

Where the names of places have changed an honest attempt to record this is made. However, wishful thinking does not produce perfection.

While perusing this site, one should never forget Anne Tyler’s quote : “While armchair travelers dream of going places, traveling armchairs dream of staying put.”
